The cult New York skincare and fragrance brand lands in London ...
Not many skincare and fragrance boutiques can boast a 19th Century apothecary counter and plywood lattice shelving, but that is what one can expect with the new Malin + Goetz store in Islington, North London. Up until now this much-loved New York brand has only been available at the likes of Liberty and Space NK, but this branch is one of the company’s two new debut London stores (the second being located in Seven Dials, Covent Garden). Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz founded the brand with their first store located in Chelsea, NYC 2003. Since then it’s amassed an underground following in the beauty world, with products recognisable by their distinct packing with large sans serif typeface (listing full ingredients and directions for applying).
With Matthew suffering from rosacea, eczema, seborrhea, fragrance allergies and dry skin, the duo made sure the products are hypoallergenic and contain no synthetic fragrances or chemical nasties. Their offering ranges from haircare, bodycare, facial skincare, men’s shaving products and – last but not least – perfume sprays, oils and candles. Refreshingly everything here is unisex – there’s no token ‘men’s’ section, from the packaging to the scents themselves.
And the scents are worth checking out, with concoctions including Dark Rum, Cannabis (which incidentally wasn’t allowed to be sold in Space NK due to its name) and Mojito. I tried their new arrival Bergamot – a sparkly, peppery number that’s a glorious summer scent but jazzy enough for evenings too. All scents are eau de toilette strength, but their first eau de parfum will be launching mid-autumn.
Other new arrivals include their Recovery Treatment Oil, with nine natural oils to soften, renew, firm and reduce inflammation – ideal for long-haul flights when your skin’s been through the mill.
Malin + Goetz is located at 146 Upper St, London N1 1QY (Islington) and 6 Monmouth St, London WC2H 9HB (Seven Dials).
