A mini Ayurvedic retreat in North West London ...
Taking care of ourselves is often viewed as extravagant or self-indulgent in the West - the mantra of "hard work never killed anyone" drummed into our heads from an early age. Yes it never killed anyone, but it doesn't necessarily make for a life worth living either. So it's only recently that I've started to take time out before the pressure of working and studying for an MA causes a full-blown meltdown. I first came across Jivita Ayurveda when I accidentally locked myself out of my house and it was raining (sod's law!). While I waiting for my flatmate to come home, I decided I might as well treat myself to a massage and stay warm and dry in the process. But I soon discovered this place offers a lot more than a spot of relaxation.
Ayurveda is an ancient wellness practise which is slowly gathering momentum over here. It centres around finding balance in all areas of our lives, from the food we eat to how we spend our time - relaxing as well as being active. The front of the shop offers food, beauty products - including several luxury 'green beauty' lines such as ILA and Pai.
The treatment rooms at the back are the real jewel in the shop's crown, ranging from traditional facials and beauty treatments to lesser-known (in the west at least) Ayurvedic rituals, such as being massaged with warm herbal pouches ("Pinda Sweda") and my personal favourite, "Katibasti" where warm oil is poured into a little circle of dough on your back, which helps reduce tension and neck pain. It's a seriously blissful experience - and just what the doctor ordered when you're feeling run down in this current weather.
