We were very sorry to hear of the recent passing of Lawrence James White, owner and founder of Dulwich fragrance boutique Roullier White. We had the pleasure of meeting Lawrence last year as his was the very first shop to be profiled on Scents and the City, and he was kind enough to show us around. In tribute we have reposted the original article below.
Less of a perfumery, it's more like a shrine to some of the most exquisite scents from around the world...
If you're looking for something a world away from department store perfume halls, this is the place to visit. A treasure trove of niche brands (several of which are UK exclusives to the store) as well as historic perfumeries, it's a world away from the bland, homogenous 'designer scents' that are all mouth and no trousers.
From the outside, you wouldn't think such a fragrant nirvana lies within. The shop started off as a place where you could pick up hand-made artisan homeware - and to a certain extent that's still the case. It's the perfumery in the back which is East Dulwich's best-kept scented secret, attracting fragrance fanatics from around the world (many Japanese tourists make a beeline for this place when they visit). If you're not sure what you're after, the assistants here are happy to spend hours wafting various things under your nose until you find The One.
I recognised all my favourite cult brands: Escentric Molecules, Juliette Has A Gun and Atelier Cologne, together with Caron, Creed and Floris London but was introduced to some delightful newcomers including Jimmy Boyd, whose scent 'Spring Rain' is definitely a future classic in the making, while Smell Bent is a new line from LA, whose creations have names like 'Walk of Shame' and 'Tokyo Mama Fizzzz' - and are definitely worth a sniff.
